  • Since you're advertising, I assume this is a good thing.

I have a question for you, since you seem to know enough about math to make instruction videos on it:

I'm seeking a degree in mathematics. I challenged College Algebra and College Trigonometry and passed, so my university wants me to start immediately with Precalculus. I'm worried that my education in Algebra and Trig is too haphazard to jump right into Precalc. Should I pay to take those classes anyway, or should I just read some textbooks and study some video lectures to refresh?
    • It really depends on how far you got into functions.

College Algebra is rules that you have to follow, so it should be very straight forward. Trigonometry I think is a little bit more challenging since you are starting to deal with functions (graphing sin, cos, tan, and using them to model real life situations... hopefully this was covered).

Calculus takes the basic functions that you should have learned in both algebra and trig and analysis them based on time .. Calculus is basically modeling things based on the rate of change [my calculus was into second year university so someone please correct me on this if i'm off].

if you are good at following rules to solve an equation then pre-calculus shouldn't be that hard. Mind you it will take a lot of hard work. What you should do is go pick up a pre-calculus book (hopefully the one your course will be using) and look through it. See if you can teach yourself the first chapter then flip to the middle and see if you understand some of it.

if you have the course outline that would help in letting you know what you might be up against.

      • My degree is Physics and I can assure you that I got all the material before the semester started and just glanced through it, then sort of played with ti. Then when class actually started, it was review, and that approch makes a difference. You don't need an IQ of 170 to pass.... actually, my girlfriend who in all honesty isn't that bright, passed and she worked, but it was mostly getting past the perception that math of any type is hard. Its not, it's just your pwerception of it that made it hard then. Change your perception and your approch...have fun with it somehow....and you'll do well. I spent 9yrs. in school and math entailed the bulk of it. make it a game and you'll win......
